Locally Owned and Operated.

We moved to Menomonie with the intention of creating Zanzibar. We wanted to create a place out of the ordinary. A place where people could relax and spend quality time with friends and family.

After traveling between Grand Forks, ND and Randolph, WI for three years, we were divinely led to the perfect location in downtown Menomonie, WI. Under the creative design and vision of Mark, also the executive chef, he set the Johnson/Mathweg family to work. After tearing down the drop ceilings and scraping paint, we discovered the original tin ceilings. The carpet was torn up, the 1970’s paneling was torn down and plaster was busted out to reveal amazing brick work. The cafe counter turned into a bar top and the back bar with ladder was designed on a bar napkin.

After we opened the doors, the citizens of Menomonie and the local area were welcoming and embraced us with open arms. Over the years, Mark has expanded their Midwest culinary palate from meat and potatoes to Armenian lahvosh, masala chicken, ceviche and flavors from all over the world.

We love living and working in Menomonie. We love creating new things, providing a warm and comfortable environment, enjoy meeting new people and forging relationships. Our search as lead us to “the most unlikely place” right in the middle of everywhere.

We welcome you to Zanzibar and look forward to serving you.

God Bless,

Mark and Robin (Mathweg) Johnson
